Nisaa performs raqs shamadan to Raqsat al-Hawanim and Ghanili Shwaya. Raqs shamadan, the candelabrum dance, emerged among Egypt's traditional entertainers toward the end of the nineteenth century. The performer wears a candelabrum (shamadan) balanced on her head. She shows off her skill and dexterity by performing feats such as descending to the floor and playing sagat while balancing the shamadan. The shamadan is also frequently worn by Egyptian dancers when they lead the zeffa (wedding procession). Recently, Nisaa has begun working with a freestanding shamadan, rather than the shamadan with the helmet base that has become standard in the industry. Both styles of shamadan are documented throughout the history of this unique dance form. However, the freestanding shamadan has rarely been documented outside of the context of performances by the Delta ghawazi and urban awalim of generations past. Nisaa is proud to represent this challenging and unusual balancing feat pioneered by Egypt's traditional entertainers. Nisaa is accompanied on tabla by the incomparable Reda Henkesh of Cairo's Muhammad Ali Street. Nisaa and Reda had just taught a weekend intensive on baladi, ghawazi, and awalim dance and music in Manchester UK - this performance was part of the weekend's activities. The event was sponsored and organized by Rachael Borek. On oud - Emad El Rashidy On duf - Medhat El Masry For more information about Nisaa, please visit: https://www.bellydancewithnisaa.com/
