What is the storming phase of team development? How do you get the hell out of it? Hi, welcome to the Let's Talk Talent channel where we discuss the world of HR and talent management. We're here to help you unlock the potential in your people. So we've all heard of Tuckman's four stages of team development: forming, storming, norming and performing. And today we're going to focus on storming. So first of all, why does storming happen? Well, storming can happen very, very easily. And it doesn't have to be your responsibility as a leader to fix it. But as a leader, you kind of need to think about your role. And there are two ways in which you can do that. First of all, deal with the storming phase really quickly. Don't let it fester. So you could create a team day for example. Or if it's an altercation between two people, get them together, start to understand the reasons why: what lies beneath? What is driving that, and how is it affecting, or even infecting, the rest of the team? So, deal with it immediately is number one. Second of all, it's all about rebuilding trust. Now, there's a reason why you're in storming. And that can be very much about the trust has been broken. It can be trust broken with you, as a leader, or trust broken between individuals or across the team. There's something going on there that you really need to understand. And sometimes that may be about taking a step back and working with a third party to think about how you might regain that trust. Now, that could be a simple 360. That could be interviews with the team. It could be actually taking the team off site, and understanding what trust means to them, and why it's been broken. Trust develops over time, but it can be gone in a second. So really, rebuilding that trust and thinking about what are the reasons behind, and dealing with it immediately, will help you navigate the storming phase and get you back into norming, and ultimately performing.
