Look. Listen. I’ll be the first to admit that we Texas style players are often all over the place when it comes to the chord progressions of perfectly reasonable tunes minding their own businesses. Today’s #texasstyletuesday number is Forked Deer and it’s a great example of said all-over-the-place-ness. You know how the B part goes to the A chord and hangs out there for a bit before resolving back to the D, both in the middle and at the end of each part? Well, toss those tired and preconceived notions right out your literal or proverbial window. We don’t do that. At least not every time. Sometimes we just stay on A through the middle. It’s fine. Don’t worry about it. Here, I gave you some low B part variations that do that and then some high B part variations that do it the old school way. The thing about this kind of music is that it is, at its heart, rather improvisational, which means that new traditions are being formed all the time. I used to find that terrifying. Now I find it freeing. It’s a fabulous excuse for not doing it the “right way.” But who decides that anyway? I think some of the way I play this comes from Terry Morris. But don’t hold me to that. Slightly longer version on Facebook and YouTube, as per usual. #fiddle #fiddlestar #fiddlelessons #5chords4ever #forkeddeer #notforkydeer
