Gorbachev in elevator STORYLINE Mikhail Gorbachev took a new direction in his career on Monday by shifting - albeit for half an hour - from being a statesman notorious for his long political speeches to a narrator of fairy-tales. The former Soviet leader, along with former US president Bill Clinton and Italian movie star Sophia Loren, contributed to a project designed to benefit children and wildlife around the world with the help of music. Sergei Prokofiev's classic "Peter and the Wolf" and the modern interpretation of the wolf's plight by French composer Jean-Pascal Beintus, "The Wolf and Peter", will be released on one CD by the Dutch label Pentatone. Pentatone's producer, Wilhelm Hellweg, joined forces with the famed Russian National Orchestra - RNO - which plays both pieces for the recording. The Wolf and Peter puts a contemporary spin on the classic story of a boy and a wolf. Emphasising sensitivity to the environment and the need for balance between man and nature, "The Wolf and Peter" was developed under the artistic direction of maestro Kent Nagano. Nagano conducted the debut performance in California in August 2002. The text is by award-winning broadcast writer and producer Walt Kraemer. All three narrators will donate their royalties to charity: Clinton to the International AIDS Trust, whose advisory committee he co-chairs with Nelson Mandela, Loren to the Magic of Music, an arts therapy programme for youth sponsored by the RNO, and Gorbachev to Green Cross International, which he founded in 1993. Proceeds will also be shared with wildlife organisations, including the New York-based Wolf Conservation Centre.
