Diving into Joe's first solo on 'I'll Play The Blues For You' (Albert King) live at the Greek Theatre. This unbelievable performance is great to get inside how he phrases and his note choice. This was the second or third time I heard this solo, so I'm working out in real time and you get to watch! There are a few things to note in this solo. It is ALL pentatonic. He plays through the chord changes seamlessly by landing on chord tones throughout each change, only using the minor pentatonic scale like a total master. There are a few things I missed going into detail about, however as a quick rundown, I think you can find some gems here. I did, however miss mentioning the context of Joe's stylings in this solo seem to be really based around Albert King's approach (like the double bend idea I mentioned was Joe's). Although this is not a standard 12 bar blues progression, he is still encapsulating the spirit of blues. His phrasing and note choice makes for a perfect solo. Nothing flashy, just pure expression, much like an Albert King solo (which is what I think he's going for here) Thanks for watching! • Joe Bonamassa - I'll Play The Blues For Yo...
