If you’re a beginner knitter you want to learn the basics and then you can knit almost any style of top you want with whatever yarn you like. My “go to” knitting uses #6US or #7US knitting needles, casting on 198-210 stitches, starting from the bottom, doing a 2” ribbing, then proceed until my work is about 16” (sometimes 18” depending on stretchability of the yarn) to the underarm. I then split the stitches to create front and back. I knit each section for 9-10” then I use an I-Cord cast off. I sew the shoulder seams (about 5-6 inches each side. Then I pick up 80-90 stitches for a sleeve. Casting off the sleeve I often use an I-Cord edging, sometimes a short ribbing. Basics! How I knit the Royal Blue sweater with puffy sleeves Cast on using Drops Baby Merino 208 (I purchased 8 balls of these 50g, but used about 6 1/2) Using #6US circular needles K1, P1, ribbing for 3” (or desired depth) Switch to #8US circular needles Knit stockinette stitch for the body until the sweater measures 16” (or desired length), which brings you to the underarm portion of your sweater. When you have knit the body of the sweater to your desired length Divide front and back stitches evenly onto straight needles. About 104 stitches Switch to straight needles (still #8US) Continue about 8-9” (depending on how deep you want your sleeve opening) Optional Eyelete pattern: Knit the front section 4” (measuring from underarm), then begin the eyelete pattern Knit the eyelete pattern: K5, yo, k2tog, k5 repeat to end of your row Next row, purl K4, yo, k2tog, yo, k2tog, k3, yo k2tog, yo, k2tog repeat from * to Next row, purl K5, yo, k2tog, *k5, yo, k2tog, repeat from * to * Purl Continue knitting until work measures 25-27” (or desired length) - this measurement is from the bottom of the hem (includes ribbing) to the top of shoulder Sew shoulders about 4-5 inches This is a drop shoulder sweater sleeves 3/4 length sleeves Pick up 90 sts using US#6 Knit in the round I knit the sleeve length for 8-9 inches (just past the elbow) Bind off Then I cast off using the usual method (knit one, knit the next stitch, slip the first stitch over the second = casting off or binding off … I used this bind off method to make it easier to identify the stitches when I sew one the knitted ribbed cuffs The bottom portion of the sleeve Ribbed cuffs Using #6US straight needles cast on 42 stitches Knit 1X1 ribbing (k1, p1) for 3” (or desired depth) Knit the diamond eyelete pattern Knit 4 rows stockinette Bind off Stitch up the side seam of the cuff Gather the end of the previously knit sleeve (because that ended with 90 sts and your cuff is 42 sts) This creates a slight gather and the puff Sew the cuff on to the bottom of the sleeve Tuck in all your loose ends Steam block the sweater (One slightly damp, tea towel. lay it on the sweater and lightly move the iron over that tea towel so that the steam can help relax the stitches) #beginnerknitting #knitting #knittingpatterns #knittingtutorial #knittingtips Knit a Wool Hat” • Knit a Wool Hat: easy basic pattern to follow “How I knit this Royal blue top” • How I knit this Royal Blue Sweater: same b... “No Pattern: Knitting video for beginners” • No Pattern: Knitting video for beginners “The Basic T: Knit a Top Without A Pattern” • The Basic T: Knit a Top Without A Pattern:... “7 Tops to Knit, Easy Knits, Beginner Friendly” • 7 Tops to Knit, Easy Knits, Beginner Friendly “3 Easy steps to knit a petite scarf: free pattern” • 3 Easy steps to knit a petite scarf: free ... “beginner Knitters can knit this easy Beanie with a Picot Edge” • Beginner Knitters can knit this easy Beani... “Easy Knit Wool Hats: the basic pattern for any kind of wool #easyknitting” • Easy Knit Wool Hats: the basic pattern for... “3 Must-Know Tips for knitting a Warm Wool Hats #beginnerknitting” • 3 Must-Know Tips for Knitting a Warm Wool ...
