If anyone should ever be looking for a recording by Elvis where he has taken a song recently recorded by another artist, added his own inimitable and unmistakable style, and made his recording a classic on it's own, then they need look no further than 'You Don't Have To Say You Love Me'. Dusty Springfield had recorded the song four years previously in London and it became her biggest hit. Whilst Springfield's version is slower and more laid back, almost typical of most 60's ballads, Elvis takes the song and adds more power and considerably more emotion into his rendition. Elvis' recording became a massive worldwide hit in it's own right and is still played by many mainstream radio stations today including BBC Radio 2. Recorded on 6 June 1970 at RCA's Studio B in Nashville, it was the second song recorded during that night's session and a master was achieved in just three takes. No accompanying vocal overdubs were added, but had considerable orchestral overdubs added by the mammoth 18 July overdub session which also included "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and "Just Pretend". The finished article would be released later in the year on "That's The Way It Is" and it would have a short rehearsal version included in the movie itself. Elvis included it as one of eight new songs introduced to his set list for his Las Vegas opening night and this version is superb with Elvis' enthusiasm for the song running right through it. It seems obvious that Elvis was determined to have the song included both in the opening show and on film by the considerable rehearsing that he did of the song. During the four filmed TTWII studio rehearsal sessions Elvis rehearsed the song a mammoth seven times as well as further filmed rehearsals on 4 August in the International Hotel's convention center and a stage rehearsal on 7 August. Version One - 10 August 1970, Opening Show - First Time Performed Live Two versions of "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" were filmed in their entirety, on opening night and during 12 August dinner show and for the re-edited version of the movie the producers decided on the latter version. As good as both versions are, it is perhaps surprising that this first version was not chosen, firstly because Elvis does not momentarily forget the words as he does on the latter version and secondly because it contains some wonderful interaction with Sammy Davis Jnr. who is in attendance at that opening night show. Version Two - 14 August 1971, Midnight Show - Las Vegas At a slightly slower tempo than the 1970 versions and just ever so slightly lacking the punch of those first versions. Version Three - 9 June 1972 - Market Square Garden Arena, New York City Performed at all four MSG shows, this is is the first of those now sung with the 1970 punch and tempo restored and a superb soprano by Kathy Westmoreland. Version Four - 3 February 1973, Midnight Show - Las Vegas Omitted from Aloha but instantly for his next engagement in Las Vegas. Version Five - 1 July 1974 - Omaha Civic Auditorium Tempo slightly increased but still sung with complete seriousness and a nice ending. Version Six - 22 July 1975 - The Final Live Rendition - Asheville Sung for the final time at one of Elvis' favourite venues and still sung with as much passion as the first version.
