A film by OH Productions and Migrant Workers Union Thailand Thai berry-pickers in Lapland This film tells about the working conditions of small farmers from Thailand who bunk in the berry-picker camps of Finnish Lapland. EPILOGUE The number of Thai pickers arriving in Finland rose abruptly in 2005, when Finnish authorities started issuing berry-buyers and berry-processing companies with quotas for the number of pickers they could import on tourist visas. Although Thai pickers enter Finland officially as 'tourists' classified as 'self-employed entrepreneurs', the last thing the Finnish berry-processing companies want is pickers who behave as tourists and self-employed entrepreneurs. In 2010 about 2000 Thai pickers worked 12 - 20 hours days, every day for 70 or 80 days, to provide Finnish buyers and processing companies with about 10 million kilos of berries. For this privilege of picking 10 million kilos for Finnish industry, pickers pay all costs of travelling from their homes in Thailand to the camps in Finland, and all costs and expenses in Finland. They also pay all their losses resulting from poor berry crops - and from poor management of their 'tourist arrangements' by the recruiting agents and berry companies. For each picker, by the end of the season, their costs and expenses are between 3,200 - 3,500 Euro. This means every picker must pick more than 3000 kilos before they even start to make money for their families. The wild-berry industry in Finland has used and has become dependent on a shameful North-South model of exploitation -- of oppressed and deeply indebted small farmers and rural workers.
