The rock is over 1,000 years old. Although it was built in the 5th century, most of the buildings that remain today were constructed much later, in the 12th and 13th centuries. According to the Tripartite Life of Saint Patrick Cashel is reputed to be the site of the conversion of the King of Munster by Saint Patrick in the 5th century. The Rock of Cashel was the traditional seat of the kings of Munster as early as the 4th century and prior to the Norman invasion.
