MILFORD, Ohio (Megan Moore) - The Clermont County Dog Training Club is hosting a barn hunting competition Saturday and Sunday. Barn hunting is a new dog sport that is growing in popularity. In this sport, dogs get to show off their natural hunting skills as they navigate a maze of straw bales to find rats that have been hidden inside tubes. Sandi McKenzie of the Clemont County Dog Training Club said that barn hunting is an excellent way for dogs to hone their hunting skills and get some exercise. McKenzie also said that the sport promotes team building between dogs and their owners. McKenzie said the competition is open to all dog breeds and that they will be seeing around 120 dogs compete throughout the weekend. The courses will grow more difficult throughout the day, but their are different levels where dogs can start out. The instant course is for dogs who have never competed in barn hunting. Three tubes are uncovered and placed throughout the maze, and the dog has to find the tube with rats inside. In the novice course, one tube of rats is hidden in the maze. The open course has two tubes of rats that have to be found. The senior level course has four that need to be found within a three-and-a-half minutes time limit, and the master course has an unknown number of rats hidden in the course. The competition is from 8 a.m. to around 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The event is free and open to the public at 6058 Kells Lane in Milford.
