Exploring Quincy Quarries and the Granite Railway Incline (Quincy, MA)

J-MASS INSTAGRAM: @jmassofficial The official theme song for my channel, “City of Steam”, was originally composed by my friend, Jesse Walsh! Check out the full song here on his YouTube channel:    • [J-MASS THEME] City of Steam   Quincy Quarries Reservation in Quincy, Massachusetts is perhaps one of the most stunning and iconic landmarks south of Boston. These jagged granite cliffs offer sweeping views of the Boston skyline, and climbing atop these rocky mounds is encouraged. While visitors can walk among these cliffs today, Quincy Quarries was not always this easily navigable. The quarry first chosen by Solomon Willard in 1825 to provide granite for the construction of the Bunker Hill Monument in nearby Charlestown, which he designed. To transport the granite from Quincy to Charlestown, a railway system known as the Granite Railway was constructed in 1826. The granite would be carried along the railway by horse-drawn wagons, all the way from the quarries to a riverside dock in Milton. From there, the granite would be shipped to Charlestown by boat, for use in the monument’s construction. One remnant of this railway system, the Granite Railway Incline, still exists at the edge of Quincy Quarries Reservation today—it was built just a few years later, in 1830. Quincy soon become known as “The Granite City”, renowned for its granite, which was shipped nationwide for construction purposes. This granite was revered for its hardness, color, and polish. However, after nearly 140 years, the last quarry permanently closed in 1963. The quarries soon become a popular spot for swimming, diving, and cliff jumping, but this often led to injuries and fatalities. By 1985, the quarries were purchased by the state, becoming Quincy Quarries Reservation, and by 2003, they were filled in using excess dirt excavated during the Big Dig in Boston, reopening to the public. Today, the reservation is completely free to visit and explore, and the granite cliffs are well known for their striking graffiti-covered jagged ledges. I’ve been coming to Quincy Quarries Reservation for many years now, so I’m glad I was finally able to film here and show you guys what makes this South Shore icon so special! As someone who does enjoy graffiti, I’ve always loved the colorful graffiti art that covers much of the rocky cliff faces—it gives the reservation a striking, vibrant look! The scenic vistas offered at the top of these cliffs are incredible; on a clear day, you’re given an excellent vantage point of Boston. This truly is a perfect site for photography! I also quite like the Quincy Quarries for their hiking options. There are several trails that loop around the property, offering great views of both the cliffs and the few remaining ponds and woodlands. In fact, some of these trails connect with the nearby Blue Hills Reservation! As the DCR owns and operates this park, it is completely free and open to the public to enjoy for various recreational uses. I’d definitely recommend you give this place a visit if you’re ever in the area! Also, be sure to check out the Granite Railway Incline, which is just a short drive away. It’s a rich piece of history, and stands as the first commercial railroad in the United States!
