In the year 1306 Robert Bruce was crowned King Robert I, King of Scots. Shortly thereafter he would suffer a disastrous defeat at the battle of Methven. On the run after a further defeat at Dalrigh the Bruce women including his wife Elizabeth de Burgh, sisters Mary and Cristiana, and daughter Marjorie to his first wife, left Kildrummy castle where Bruce’s brother Nigel came under siege from English forces. Under escort by Earl of Atholl they made their way north hoping to reach the Orkneys, and possibly onwards to safety in Norway. They did not make it and were captured by the Earl of Ross at St Duthac’s Chapel in Tain, Highlands, and were led south to Edward I in England. They would be separated and remain captive for 8 long years before being free souls again. This film explores St Duthac’s, or St Duthus Chapel in the Royal Burgh of Tain. If you possess a strong sense of place and can vividly picture the scene in your mind, this overgrown and ruinous ancient building in this Highland town is well worth a visit.
