Rue des Lombards takes its name from the Lombard money changers who settled there in the 13th century. The street, which was part of an east-west axis extended by Rue de la Verrerie and Rue du Roi-de-Sicile, prior to the creation of Philippe-Auguste's city wall around 1200, and which branched off Rue Saint-Antoine, is one of the oldest in Paris. It is located within the first city wall on the right bank, dating from the 10th or 11th century. This street was completely built by 1250. In 1300, it was called "Rue de la Buffeterie." Its current name was given to it in 1322, when the Lombards, merchants, bankers, and usurers, settled in the neighborhood.
