Shocking Poverty at a White Squatter Camp in Elon Musk’s Hometown-- Pretoria, South Africa 🇿🇦

In this sobering documentary, I visit one of South Africa’s most impoverished white squatter camps—located just minutes from Elon Musk’s childhood home in Pretoria. This camp offers a sobering glimpse into a side of South Africa rarely shown in the media: extreme white poverty in a country still shaped by its apartheid past and present-day policies like Black Economic Empowerment (BEE). During my visit, I speak with several residents—most of them unemployed—who share raw, unfiltered stories about their daily struggles. Many survive by recycling garbage or even retrieving food from trash dumps. I tour their makeshift homes, many of which are exposed to the elements and plagued by sewage and poor sanitation. I also ask the residents about Donald Trump's plan to offer refugee status to white South Africans who claim they are being persecuted. The idea resonates with many, who feel they have no future in South Africa and express a desire to move to America for a better life. Some residents also voice frustration about immigrants from Zimbabwe and Malawi, whom they blame for driving down wages. One woman tearfully reveals how her 12-year-old son became addicted to gambling and has stolen from their home. The stories here are raw, controversial, and deeply human.
