Dedicated to the otherwise forgotten Bulgarians of Iraqi Freedom. A reminder that the history of the Bulgarian Special Operations Forces during the Iraq War is equally as important as the rest of the Coalition. Bulgaria. In the early 2000's, it had only just started to find a proper footing militarily; suffering deeply in the mid to late 1990s, as a result of multiple financial and economic crisis, the Special Operations Forces, otherwise known collectively as the 68th Special Operations Battalion, were familiarising themselves with NATO standard doctrine whilst working alongside counterparts from the US and Germany. BUSOF, Bulgarian Special Operations Forces, find their roots tracing back to the 'specialised' sections of the Bulgarian General Infantry, which became what would be now known as the Bulgarian Army - from fighting in the foothills of the Bulgarian country as freedom fighters, to the battlefields in 2000's Afghanistan and Iraq under ISAF and MNF-I respectively. Sporting their M2003 pattern DCU, earlier Splinter camouflage and M2000 woodland uniforms, they were starting to become comparable to the rest of the NATO forces in the region - whilst Romania chose a copy to the British Desert DPM, and Albanian Special Forces chose surplus US 6-colour DCUs, the Bulgarian's sought their own distinct scheme. All respects to the operators who fought, saved and supported their brothers and sisters in arms during the worst of times; the critical thinking of the medical staff during the attack in Karbala and the bravery of those who fought alongside the Polish during the Karbala City Hall ambush.
