Experience one of Frank Lloyd Wright's designed homes, made for the Martin/Foster Family in Derby, NY. This architectural delight hosts 1 hour or 2 hour extended tours of this lovingly restored home. It's hard to put into words the feelings you get as you emerge form the gardens up front and start your way down the angled drive towards such an incredibly designed home. Frank Lloyd Wright's designs are meant to be part of the landscape so that it appears the structure is one with the land. The use of materials found on site, the neutral colors used, and the amount of windows which make the home appear see-through help with the visual. The view of Lake Erie not only can be viewed from every room of the home, but from just about anywhere you are on the property. As you walk from room to room, you can understand why Frank Lloyd Wright is revered as one of the most influential architect's in modern history. His use of materials along with how they are used bring his works to life. While some changes were made to his original plans by the Martin's, he stood his ground on others knowing that if they were altered, it would ruin the vision and overall appeal of the home. One such space is Isabell's room where there isa large walk-in closet which was supposed to be a bathroom. Isabell wanted to make sure that every room had a view of the lake so Frank Lloyd Wright had to find a way to put a window into the chimney. He not only figured it out but also found a way to make it look beautiful. What was originally the home of the chauffeur above the garage, turned into the home for the daughter and son-in-law after his services were no longer required. The design is no less stunning than the main home and can almost be viewed as an extension of it, with a short wall connecting the two. The 2 hour extended tour costs $45. per person and is well worth it to tour this work of art.
