SESSION 1: Digitisation and improving access Monday, May 29, 2023 - 11:10 - 12:40 ‘Digitalisation, dissemination, translation: the folklore archives’ contribution to ecological awareness’ Taive Särg, Senior Research Fellow and Ave Goršič, Senior Research Fellow, Estonian Folklore Archives, Estonian Literary Museum Various fields of human activity are exposed to ecological and societal problems - the decline of natural resources, climate change, changes in languages, etc. The western anthropocentric culture has been interpreted as the root of ecological crises (Kopnina et al 2018, Chakrabarty 2021). Against the background of these processes, there exists a growing interest in alternative, pre-modern ways of thinking in line with nature, also documented in folklore texts. The folklore archives can contribute to environmental awareness by making folklore perspectives more accessible through carefully considered actions. In the build-up to the European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024, the Estonian Folklore Archives of the Estonian Literary Museum develops a digital project Enter Woodland Spirits with two outputs: 1) the web anthology Estonian Nature Folklore, providing information on human-nature relationship and nature ethics (https://www.folklore.ee/loodus/en/pro..., and 2) a digital art exhibition, inspired by the folklore published in the anthology. Our paper will analyse the experience of compiling the online publication of systematised and relevant material. The presentation focuses on: 1) the accessibility of our archive’s resources that have been partly digitalised. The audience of our archive has by and large remained the same throughout the last centennial, but they increasingly prefer working online, to which the archives are adapting. More specifically, we have made efforts to create thematic (sub)pages, such as the nature folklore anthology. 2) attempt to reach wider user circles. The goal next to the locality is international access, so the anthology is trilingual - South Estonian, literary Estonian, English. 3) the function of folklore archives in the eyes of society. We touch upon the situation that the necessities of the archives and a wider understanding of its function diverge, so the communication on our part must be continuous and clear.
