Still untarnished by the false promises of the rapacious film industry, the wide-eyed actress, Betty, sets foot on bustling, sun-kissed Hollywood. Brimming with hope, and eager to spread her wings and prove her worth, Betty moves in Aunt Ruth's expensive apartment, unbeknownst to her, however, that fate has other plans in store for her, setting the stage for life-altering experiences with the unexpected, the indecipherable, and the unknown. Now, in the centre of an elaborate labyrinth of half-truths, faded memories, unrequited loves, and dangerous encounters with the city's ugly face lies a strange key to a mysterious keyhole, an even stranger indigo-blue cube, the young director, Adam, and one cryptic woman: the amnesiac brunette and devilishly seductive car-crash survivor, Rita. But, time flies and Rita's opaque past demands answers. After all, both women deserve the truth. What is the secret of the serpentine, dream-crushing Mulholland Drive? ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• “Delicious Things” is the second track on Wolf Alice’s third album, Blue Weekend. This narrative song is backed by hi-hats, reggae bass, and chords. The track describes a transformative and, in some ways, unnerving experience in Los Angeles. In this song, lead singer Ellie Rowsell sings about the new experiences found in a party in LA, but as we get an insight into her stream of consciousness, we see her worry that she’ll be trapped in the glamorous world, and doubts on whether she truly belongs there. Lyrically, “Delicious Things” sees Rowsell musing on the seductive promise of fame and accompanying bad choices in men and recreational activities. Disillusioned and bored with the flimsy veneer of LA stardom, she ends the track by phoning her mum. The video portrays her in the back of an increasingly hazy ride-share, as a cast of colourful characters come and go, interacting and engaging in various ways. Some fight, some kiss, some drink...all the while, she sits and allows her voice to shine a light on the unquestionable reality that she doesn’t quite fit. Blinded by the flashing lights of the big city; the glitz and glamour gaudy and insincere; the extravagance and indulgence nauseating and sticky sweet...Welcome to Hollywood. This song has been praised lavishly by critics. Guitar.com described it as a “simply glorious pop tune” and “perhaps the most compelling song Wolf Alice have ever conceived”. Lyrics: Could I belong here? The vibes are kinda strong here The vibes are kinda wrong here, scared to know just what goes on here Some guy has taken me into his garden It seems to be some kind of mountain I'm socially anxious and a long way from home I've only just learnt my margarita from mojito, so Could I belong here? The vibes are kinda strong here Ask me if I'm from here and I won't say no I, I won't say no, I'll give it a go Oh, I won't say no, I'll give it a Shot for the spot at the top, a girl like mе Would you believe I'm in Los Angеles? This guy asks me where my home is, I say "I don't know it's Probably where the boy I love and left all on his own is" He rolls his eyes and cuts a selfish line of blow He was here for one thing, if he can't get it then he'll go, but I don't care, I'm in the Hollywood Hills I'm no longer pulling pints, I'm no longer cashing tills and I'm alive, I feel like Marilyn Monroe If you're all poppin' pills, you know I won't say no I, I won't say no, I'll give it a go Oh, I won't say no, I'll give it a Shot for the spot at the top, a girl like me Would you believe I'm in Los Angeles? Don't lose sight Don't lose sight The guy from the garden, I think his name is Adam He's in bed here beside me, though I think he is a bad man He liked the fact that I play music in a band He is making a movie and the score needs a hand Feel like I'm falling, dreams slowly stalling Extravagance disguised as elegance is boring I don't belong here, though it really is quite fun here "Hey, is mum there? It's just me, I felt like calling" I, I won't say no, I'll give it a go Oh, I won't say no, I'll give it a Shot for the spot at the top, a girl like me Would you believe I'm in Los Angeles? Don't lose sight Don't lose sight Don't lose sight Don't lose sight, mm
