The Kouri Richins murder trial opened with evidence that made the courtroom go silent. Prosecutor Brad Bloodworth revealed three memes allegedly found on Kouri's phone the morning her husband Eric's body was removed from their Kamas, Utah home. "I'm rich." Their three sons were still upstairs, unaware their father was dead. Opening statements laid bare the prosecution's theory: a woman allegedly drowning in $4.5 million of debt, carrying on an affair with Josh Grossman, and booking Caribbean vacation plans for one month after Eric's March 2022 death. Bloodworth told jurors Kouri waited fifteen minutes after grabbing her phone before dialing 911. Internet searches allegedly recovered from her devices included queries about women's prisons and lie detector tests. Defense attorney Kathryn Nester fired back by playing Kouri's 911 call—raw, sobbing, barely coherent. She painted Eric as a man struggling with Lyme disease, chronic pain, and painkiller dependence. She attacked the credibility of key prosecution witness Carmen Lauber, who allegedly changed her story about selling fentanyl only after police threatened her with prison time. Lauber's own dealer later signed an affidavit claiming he sold OxyContin, not fentanyl. The Moscow mule glasses Eric drank from were never tested. The house was never searched for fentanyl. The death certificate lists manner of death as unknown. Eric's sister Katie Richins-Benson delivered powerful testimony, describing Kouri as composed and business-focused while the family collapsed in grief—allegedly moving forward with plans to close on a multimillion-dollar mansion and sell the home where Eric died. Nester closed with an optical illusion showing either a young woman or a witch, telling jurors the state would show them the witch while she'd reveal a widow. Carmen Lauber and Josh Grossman testimony still ahead. Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video?
