Initially designed around 200 BC, the Astrolabe is an analog computer based on a Geocentric Solar System. The iPhone of its day, the design reached its pinnacle around 800AD in the Islamic World. It was well known amongst the educated classes and mariners in the Middle Ages. In this episode we will discuss the construction and parts of the Astrolabe, using both a precision brass model and a wooden one I built from a kit. We will discuss the Zodiacal Calendar, Modern Calendar, the Equinox and Solstice and how to sight a celestial body, tell the time of day, and calculate the time of dawn.
