Multiple Broken Legs, Babesia, & Entropion (2 March 2025) DONATIONS NEEDED FOR SURGICAL CARE FOR THIS DOG!!!!!! Where to even begin with this poor guy? Today we were in the Donbas distributing food to people who have given themselves to caring for the animals left behind. At one residence we saw this poor guy basically dragging himself on his front legs and unable to put any weight on his right rear leg. He was actually just hopping himself along with his back left leg and using his front legs to keep his face from hitting the ground each time. CLEARLY, this dog needed help. Yet the woman said "he has been like this all his life," which we knew was far from true. It took some time to convince her that the dog needed to go to the vet since she felt the dog would heal itself. It clearly would not heal on it's own and we basically told her that we were taking the dog whether she liked it or not, and that we would take care of getting his legs fixed. We called a vet that we know and he agreed to come in and meet us on his day off to take a look at this dog. We are very thankful that he did, and he was glad he did when he saw the situation. Both front legs are old injuries or dislocations that improperly healed and contracted the muscles. This prevents the dog from extending both of his front legs and the only remedy is going to be surgery on both front legs. Moving to the back legs, there are multiple fractures in the tibia, fibula, and metatarsals. This is the reason that he cannot place any weight on that back right leg and why walking is impossible for him. Yet again, the only remedy for this injury is going to be surgery. Then the next issue came up when his temperature was elevated and there was indication of fleas and tick bites on his neck. It appears that he has babesia in his system, and that is a fatal disease in dogs if not treated. He received two injections today and will get another two in two weeks. The final issue (we hope) is a condition called entropion. That is when a dog has a double eyelid which can cause blindness in dogs. The extra fold in the eyelid rubs against the lens and cornea and basically scours them until the dog goes blind in that eye. It can also lead to ocular infections that may require the removal of the eye. This dog needs help, and needs help badly. We are going to be splitting the vet costs with another group to ensure that this guy gets the love and care that he not only deserves, but which he has never had before. This is, with almost certainty, his first ever trip to the vet. We really do need your help to ensure we hold up our end of the deal for half of his surgical and rehabilitative costs.
