Mechanism of photosynthesis Light reactions Light-dependent reactions are certain photochemical reactions involved in photosynthesis, the main process by which plants acquire energy. Light absorbed by chlorophyll molecules break the water molecules and produce oxygen O2Photosynthesis is the process by which plants, algae, and some bacteria convert light energy, usually from the sun, into chemical energy in the form of glucose (sugar) and oxygen. This process is vital for life on Earth as it forms the basis of most food chains and produces the oxygen we breathe. Key components and steps of photosynthesis: Light-dependent reactions: These reactions occur in the thylakoid membranes within chloroplasts and use light energy to produce ATP and NADPH, which are energy-carrying molecules, and also split water molecules, releasing oxygen. Light-independent reactions (Calvin cycle): These reactions occur in the stroma of the chloroplast and use the ATP and NADPH from the light-dependent reactions to convert carbon dioxide into glucose.
