In this video, we demonstrate how to map and analyse annual frost days (days with minimum air temperature below 0°C) across Norway using ERA5 daily temperature data in Google Earth Engine (GEE). This step-by-step tutorial covers how to define your area of interest (AOI) using official FAO administrative boundaries and then load and process ERA5 minimum temperature data from 1980 to 2020. We begin by focusing on a single year (2018) to show how to calculate frost days by filtering the ERA5 dataset, converting temperatures from Kelvin to Celsius, and identifying days when the minimum temperature drops below zero. You’ll learn how to visualize these results directly on the map and export them for offline analysis. Next, we expand the analysis across 40 years by building an automated yearly processing routine using Earth Engine’s mapping functions. The video includes generating a time-series chart that shows the average number of frost days per year over Norway from 1979 to 2020. Finally, we demonstrate how to export a multi-year composite image representing frost day patterns across all years. This tutorial is perfect for researchers, climate scientists, and GEE learners interested in climate analysis, frost monitoring, or long-term temperature trends using satellite-based datasets. By the end of this video, you'll be equipped to replicate the workflow for other regions or climatic variables using GEE.
