Impoverished sheep-cocky Tom Collins has vivid reveries of breeding a racehorse to win the Melbourne Cup. His wife Ngaire is obsessed with meeting The Queen on her latest royal tour. When supernatural lightning strikes the last of their flock and begets a golden fleece, the enchanted ram becomes the profitable answer to their dreams. Or so it would seem… Production Funding HOT WOOL was funded by the Screen Innovation Production Fund, a partnership between Creative New Zealand and the New Zealand Film Commission. “Thank You.” Exhibition History Initially passed over for selection by New Zealand’s largest film festivals, Christchurch-made short film HOT WOOL instead premiered in the United States on October 15, 2021. It quickly became a bona fide hit on the North American sci-fi film festival circuit, entertaining fantasy fans in New York, Los Angeles, Miami and six other North American cities. The short also proved a huge genre success with international audiences, achieving official selection for thirty festivals in countries as diverse as Australia, Chile, Germany, Greece, India, Norway, Singapore, South Africa and Turkey. Awards A notable hybrid, the film received awards across multiple genres – Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Folklore, Comedy and Silent Film. During its twenty-two-month exhibition run, the film garnered twenty-one international awards, including six Best Fantasy Short at festivals in Brazil, Canada, China, France, Spain and United States, and a Best Mythology-Folklore distinction in England. The film features not a single word of character dialogue with story and plot conveyed purely visually and was bestowed Best Silent Film three times. In Australia, HOT WOOL was paired with the award-winning Peruvian feature length science-fiction silent film, El Corazón de la Luna (Moon Heart). In addition, the film enjoyed technical accolades for art direction, cinematography, editing, visual effects, with individual screenplay, producing and directing honours for the filmmaker. Foreign and Alternative Titles The title HOT WOOL was most often translated literally, such as Lã Quente (Brazil), Laine Chaude (France), Heiβe Wolle (Germany), Le Lana Che Scotta (Italy), Lana Caliente (Spain). However, some countries used an appropriate alternative title, such as El Vellón de Oro - The Golden Fleece (Chile). Producer’s Statistics HOT WOOL was on international festival screens for a total of 120 days. Assuming a standard month of 30 days, the film was screened every day for a total of 4 months. The territories with the most numerous individual festivals screening HOT WOOL were the United States (9), followed by Canada, France and Italy (2). HOT WOOL finally premiered in New Zealand on July 1, 2022 – some 10 months after its World premiere and approximately halfway through its globe-trotting journey. The Auckland festival screening remains the film’s sole theatrical screening in its country of origin. HOT WOOL was streamed for a total of 30 days – 7 days across 40 countries of the Pacific rim, and 23 days across all Australian territories, excepting the Sydney-based festival host state of New South Wales. Festivals in Canada and Greece invited HOT WOOL to return for repeat screenings at different cities. Simultaneous festival exhibition reached its zenith in September 2022, with screenings on 27 days of the month, peaking on September 10 when HOT WOOL was screened in London, Capetown and Castillonnès in France on the same calendar day. After a final screening in Italy, HOT WOOL was retired from festival exhibition on August 30, 2023, arguably the most successful short film export to emerge from Canterbury in many years. HOT WOOL premiered on YouTube October 15, 2025 - the fourth anniversary of its World premiere. Production Trivia The supernatural sheep 'Goldie' was performed by a champion Merino named Sir Robert, namesake of Sir Robert Muldoon, a former Prime Minister of New Zealand. Some scenes were filmed at ‘Otahuna’, an historic homestead that was the former residence of Sir Heaton Rhodes, the son of a sheep farmer who rose to become a respected member of the New Zealand Parliament. Farmer Tom Collins’ horse is named 'Lar Phap', a spoonerism of Phar Lap, a New Zealand-bred champion racehorse which became a legend of Australian sporting history. The title HOT WOOL was consistently marketed in upper-case letters, to echo the sensational newspaper headlines featured in the film. Cinema Footnote Of the six principal characters in HOT WOOL, three are animals: a sheep, a dog and a horse, all of which portrayed dual roles – quite possibly unique in the annals of cinema. Please share HOT WOOL with your family, friends, club or community group - like all visual arts, films only truly exist when they connect with an audience. Thank You. #NZShortFilm, #FantasyShort, #AwardWinning
