We tried to contact the commission well before this happened and other organisations tried to contact the commission before this happened saying these people are coming. We need to warn them, we need to tell them. They need counselling, but we got nothing from the commission, nothing from the government. This was avoidable, it is a disgrace." 12. Close of woman being given water to drink STORYLINE: Graphic video footage of South African police shooting dead 34 protesting mine strikers in August left the victims' widows weeping inconsolably when it was shown unannounced at an official inquest on Tuesday. The Marikana Commission - which is investigating violence at Lonmin's platinum mines on 16 August as well as related incidents in which up to 46 people were killed- was disrupted by the emotional response of grieving family members to the video footage which shows some of the worst state violence since the end of apartheid since 1994. Some family members cried and others covered their faces as the video showed strikers being shot down in a hail of bullets. One woman fainted and was carried out of the hall. Ian Farlam, a retired judge who is heading the commission, quickly apologised for showing the footage without warning family members. However for lawyers representing families of the dead miners, the apology was too little, too late. "What happened was unforgivable and disgraceful. Grieving widows and mothers and sisters ... were shown for the very first time, unannounced and unwarned, footage from the television showing their loved ones being slaughtered by machine-gun fire," said James Nichol, a legal representative for the families of the dead miners. As a result of their strike, miners at the Lonmin platinum plant later got a hefty pay raise of up to 22 percent. Their wage gains inspired a wave of wild-cat strike action across South Africa. Some of the strikes at gold and platinum mines remain unresolved, according to analysts.
