Professor Robert McCarter lectures to the Fine Arts Society of Peoria on Carlo Scarpa (1906-1978), a unique figure among second-generation Modern architects, being at once deeply embedded in the archaic and anachronistic culture of Venice, and at the same time transforming this ancient place by weaving the most Modern of spatial conceptions into its material fabric. Scarpa stood in two worlds, the ancient and the modern, the particular historical place and the larger contemporary world, and through his work he forever joined those two worlds, constructing works that integrate, engage, and transform their place. Dr. McCarter is a practicing architect, author, and the Ruth and Norman Moore Professor of Architecture at the Washington University in St. Louis. His architectural practice has constructed 25 works since 1982. He is the author of 23 books, including "Carlo Scarpa" (Phaidon, 2013; reissued 2021). McCarter was an International Exhibitor in the 2018 Venice Biennale of Architecture and was named one of the “Ten Best Architecture Teachers in the US” in 2009.
