When you finally find the thing/person that has long been your thought of the day and dream of the night, when your ultimate longing is fulfilled, what will you feel? Ecstasy that lets out an overjoyed scream with lightning eyes? Composed during the lengthy time when he longs for Clara, his distant beloved, and the marriage with whom was yet far from certain, Schumann suggests otherwise in the C-major Fantasie. In the first movement, the unconventional beginning in the dominant instead of tonic (G instead of C) alludes to an urging search for the musical resolution: a “perfect authentic cadence” in C major –that is, an ending chord which both the highest & lowest notes are C, with natural E and G in between. Yet through this sometimes breathless, sometimes doubtful, and sometimes agonising search the music finally reaches the perfect authentic cadence on the very last page. What’s more, one hears not a sense of ecstasy or victory but instead, a peaceful heart, inside which is fully lit with pure bliss, just like when a pitch-black room is wholly lit up with a single candle.
