Romans 7:14-20, Why do I do what I hate to do? In verse 14-20 Paul describes the constant war that rages inside of every believer, why do I do what I hate to do? Why do we say things we don’t want to say? Why do we watch things we don’t want to watch? Why do we do things we don’t want to do? What he gets to here is the heart is the difference between the believer and the world. A believer knows that certain behavior is wrong, and it truly tears them apart to know that they have walked into sin. There is a war that rages inside of them pulling them back and forth and at times they give in and do the thing they didn’t want to do. This is in direct contrast to the world who simple just gives into sin and willingly walks into it. Paul gives us a good explanation as to why we do this in verse 14 when he says, “we know the law is spiritual, but I am unspiritual.” Paul has already established that the law of God is Holy, now he is saying it is not only holy it is spiritual as well. What he is saying is that our flesh is at a constant war with our spirit? Our spirit which is in fellowship with God still must deal with our earthly bodies that is carnal. In Galatians 5:16 Paul says that we must choose to walk by the Spirit so that we do not fulfill the lust of our flesh. So, when we give in and do things, we don’t want to do we are allowing our flesh to reign over our spirit, and this is something we should strive to never let happen. It is a war that we will never completely win in this life, but it is one worth fighting as scripture is clear that Jesus has given us the ability to be victorious over sin in our lives. The key is when sin does have its victory over us in this life that we repent immediately and get back to letting the spirit lead guide and direct us.
