The band started off in 1958 as backing musicians for London vocalist Stan Saxon, with Dave Clark on drums and background vocals, Rick Huxley on guitar and the other members changing frequently. in January 1962 they decided to split from Stan Saxon and formed their own band, The Dave Clark Five, regularly playing at the South Grove Youth Club in Tottenham, London. Soon the band members settled into: 1. Dave Clark on drums 2. Rick Huxley on bass 3. Lenny Davidson on lead guitar 4. Denis Payton on saxophone 5. Mike Smith on keyboards and lead vocals. Most of the band’s original songs were written by Dave Clark and Mike Smith, although the other members also contributed from time to time. They were very popular in the UK, where they had 12 Top 40 hits between 1964 and 1967, but also in the USA where they had 17 hits in the Billboard Top 40. This resulted in them being invited to appear on The Ed Sullivan Show in the US in March 1964, eventually making 18 appearances – more than any other British group. They also released a film, “Catch Us If You Can” in the UK in 1965, which was released in the USA as “Having a Wild Weekend”. Declining to follow the psychedelic music trend, Dave Clark Five’s popularity waned, and they disbanded in 1970, although Dave continued with a few new members and renamed the band to "Dave Clark & Friends". The finally broke up in 1972. In South Africa they had 5 Top 20 hits: 1. Catch us if you can - 1965, #5, 11 weeks 2. Everybody get together – 1970, #18, 2 weeks 3. Everybody knows – 1968, #7, 8 weeks 4. Good old rock 'n roll – 1970, #16, 6 weeks 5. The red balloon – 1968, #6, 12 weeks Dave Clark Five were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on 10 March 2008. This song was released on 7" single in 1968.
