Chinatown in Melbourne is one of the city’s most iconic cultural precincts, centred on Little Bourke Street between Swanston and Spring Streets in the Melbourne CBD. It was established in the 1850s during the Victorian gold rush when Chinese migrants first arrived seeking opportunity, making it the oldest Chinatown in Australia and one of the longest continuous Chinese settlements in the Western world. Today, Chinatown is a lively neighbourhood blending historical character with modern culture. Its heritage streetscape of low-rise brick buildings is filled with Chinese and Asian restaurants — from traditional yum cha and dumpling houses to contemporary Asian fusion — as well as grocery stores, herbal medicine shops, fashion boutiques and cafés. The area is marked by five traditional archways, red lanterns, neon signage and atmospheric laneways that make it a favourite spot for dining, nightlife and exploration. Visitors can also explore cultural sites like the Museum of Chinese Australian History, which documents the Chinese community’s contributions to Australia. Chinatown remains a vibrant cultural hub and popular destination for locals, interstate travellers and international visitors, hosting festivals, events and celebrations that reflect Melbourne’s multicultural identity.
