Before returning to his school aboard, 19-year-old Chí Chi is desperate to reconnect with his once-beloved grandmother. But, as he soon discovers, time has changed them both beyond recognition. ----------------------------------------------------------- This film means the world to me. It’s a semi-autobiographical reflection of my relationship with my grandmother—my childhood in Ningbo, China, playing in the river behind her house, and now, the silence that fills our conversations. It’s about my nostalgia for those times and my longing to understand her beyond just “奶奶” (“grandma”). Thank you to everyone who was part of this journey. I’m in awe of all of you, and I’ve learned so much about production through this experience. I’ll always cherish the moments we shared on set, memories of us skipping along the hot concrete roads near the creek to capture the best-looking shots. This film was inspired by Sean Wang’s short documentary Nǎi Nai & Wài Pó. From the deeply personal nature of the film to the lighting and editing style, I couldn’t help but stay completely engaged, reflecting on my own relationship with my grandma. Needless to say, I absolutely loved his recent debut feature Dìdi, which explores the universal themes of adaptation and family tensions from the perspective of a third-culture kid.
