In October last year, experts from De Montfort University, Leicester, outlined a new way of teaching healthcare, one which better equips graduates to understand the increasingly complex needs of the local communities they serve and reject outdated stereotypes regarding the characteristics of individuals from other cultures. This is Decolonising Healthcare. Jointly delivered by Professor Ivan Browne OBE - award-winning former director of public health in Leicester - and Simon Oldroyd, DMU's Pro Vice-Chancellor Sustainability and Dean of Health and Life Sciences, this presentation considers what needs to change in education to better address the real-worlds needs of the communities in which healthcare graduates go on and work. They also illustrate how De Montfort is already leading adapting its curriculum to meet this challenge. Afterwards, Guardian columnist Polly Toynbee chaired a panel discussion with Stephen Walcott, Head of Research at the Runnymede Trust, and Dr Annabel Sowemimo, doctor and author of Divided: Racism, Medicine and Why We Need to Decolonise Healthcare.
