Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur (31 December 1910 - 12 September 1992) hailed from Dharwad, Karnataka, and was an exponent of khayal gayaki, having been trained in the Gwalior and Atrauli gharana traditions. He learnt from Pandit Nilakanthbua Alurmath of Miraj, who had, in turn, received ta’lim from Pandit Balakrishnabua Ichalkaranjikar. Subsequently, Mansur ji became the gandabandh shagird of Ustad Badruddin ‘Manjhi’ Khan sahib, the son of Ustad Ghulam Ahmed 'Allahdiya' Khan sahib, one of the progenitors of the Atrauli gharana tradition. Following the untimely demise of Ustad Manjhi Khan sahib, Mansur ji subsequently learnt from Ustad Shamsuddin ‘Bhurji’ Khan sahib, the younger son of Ustad Allahdiya Khan sahib. Through his eclectic ta’lim and meticulous riyaz, Mansur ji was able to craft a gayaki which was instrumental in popularising the Atrauli gharana repertoire, along with several other representatives of the gharana tradition. It is my distinct pleasure to share this unique set of archival recordings of Mansur ji for several reasons. Firstly, this was perhaps the only time that Mansur ji had agreed to undertake a systematic documentation of the ragas and bandish-es that had been passed on to him by his gurus. Secondly, the recordings reflect the way he was focused on the method of ta’lim and its process because Mansur ji went to Baba Azizuddin Khan sahib (the son of Ustad Bhurji Khan sahib, who was the last of the gurus of Mansur ji) in Kolhapur before each stint of the documentation session to make him listen to the bandish-es as well as the raga roop. Thirdly, from what I have been told, the documentation took place in three cities - Bhopal, Mumbai & Dharwad - at different times during 1985. The person to whom the credit for curating the selection of ragas for the documentation as well as preserving it for posterity is Shri S. Kalidas, one of the most beloved disciples of Mansur ji. I have known Kalidas ji for nearly 20 years and have learnt a lot from him - how to listen, what to focus on, how to analyse a rendition, the way to interpret anecdotes and contextualise them in the process of historiography of Indian Classical Music, etc. Conversations with him have always been free-flowing, organically evolving and open-ended, laden with a lot to think about and reflect upon afterwards.
