Java | Gamelan Calung Banyumasan | Suka Balen and Tembang Mantram

This videoclip features a performance of gamelan calung, a musical ensemble from the Banyumas district on the border between Central and West Java (Sunda), accompanying a lénggér dance. In 2024, celebrating the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Italy and Indonesia, the Intercultural Institute of Comparative Music Studiesinvited to Venice a group of artists from Banyumas, a region renowned for its artistic heritage, which revolves around bamboo music culture. Recognized music and dance experts with rich and diverse backgrounds are involved in the project. In the notes for the concert programme, Daniele Zappatore writes that gamelan calung are small ensembles introduced in the Banyumas area in the early decades of the last century. The ensemble includes bamboo idiophones (calung barung and penerus, dendhem, kethuk-kenong), drums (kendhang ciblon and ketipung) and an aerophone with a gong function (gong sebul). The vocal component plays an important role with both sindhenan (female solo singing) and senggakan/ gerongan (male chorus). Calung music is characterized by sustained performance tempi, dense rhythmic interlacements, sudden dynamic changes, and intense interplay between vocal and instrumental parts. Such elements confer to it a bright and very lively character. Calung music accompanies the lénggér, a sensual and captivating dance performed by women (lengger wadon) or men in cross-dressing (lengger lanang). It seems that in the past, this choreographic genre played a fundamental function in the ritual and ceremonial life of Banyumas. This function has declined over the past half-century, when the lénggér has been revisited in a spectacular key to celebrate festive occasions (private or community) or large events intended for public entertainment. In the video excerpt, lénggér Gading Nadaswara Banyubiru dances to the notes of the piece Suka Balen. The lyrics of the song tell the story of a married couple who, despite having no children and living in poor conditions, continue to love each other deeply. The first section of the piece is characterized by rhythmic-melodic interlocking between the two gambangs as background for the intonation of a choral section, while the second part features the sindhen's voice. In the following piece 'Tembang Mantram' (3'16''), Darno composes vocal material with religious content in a syncretic key. The sindhen cyclically intones the tembang 'Mati Nglayung' while the male choir chants a mantra in unison. The two parts overlap in a staggered manner, only to meet again, after a few repetitions, on the final cadence. The language of this section is courtly Javanese. The text of the first tembang is a reflection on the transience of life and the fear of death. The mantra, on the other hand, describes two characters of noble origins in the act of burning incense to invoke the God of the Islamic religion. The piece ends with a choral intonation of another mantra that draws on the practice of ishaa (Islamic evening prayer), recalling the chanting of verses from the Quran ('I wakkabir'). Drums accompany the chanting by improvising rhythmic interlocking. The iteration of the mantra accompanies the frantic 'awakening' of the cross-dressed dancer, Rianto, who shakes his body in a crescendo of intensity. As it accelerates toward the final climax, the chanting gives way to the guttural rhythmic interpunctuations of the male chorus, losing full meaning and evoking a condition of 'mystical abandonment of the senses’. The performance, curated by Daniele Zappatore, was organized by the Intercultural Institute for Comparative Music Studies of the Fondazione Giorgio Cini in collaboration with the Benedetto Marcello Conservatory of Music in Venice, the Indonesian Embassy in Rome and the Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Danaindonesiana Funding Program).
