In this powerful episode of the Cancer Interviews podcast, host Bruce Morton sits down with Elise Fourie, a psychologist from Pretoria, South Africa, who shares her deeply personal and unexpected thyroid cancer journey—beginning with something as seemingly harmless as mouth ulcers. It all started in October 2002, when Elise developed painful mouth ulcers that didn’t respond to over-the-counter treatments. What began as a minor discomfort escalated into something life-altering. Her doctor visit led to an emergency room referral, where scans revealed two nodules on her thyroid. This chain of events culminated in a diagnosis of follicular thyroid cancer—a rare but treatable form of thyroid cancer. Despite the initial inconclusive biopsy, Elise’s surgeon recommended immediate thyroid removal. As a psychologist, Elise was acutely aware of how the thyroid affects memory and energy, and she pleaded with the medical team to leave the thyroid intact. But the surgeon insisted on full removal. When breaking the diagnosis, he told her something she would never forget: “If God tells you that you have to have cancer, but you can choose which, you choose this type.” Treatment and Recovery Journey Elise underwent surgery, during which the left thyroid lobe was removed. Following the operation, she had two rounds of radioactive iodine treatment—a common therapy for follicular thyroid cancer. Though she avoided chemotherapy, the radioactive iodine came with its own set of challenges, including swollen glands that temporarily gave her a “chipmunk” appearance and severely limited her ability to eat. She also underwent scans using a scintigraph, a nuclear medicine imaging technique that highlights any remaining thyroid tissue. After the first treatment, her body “lit up like a Christmas tree.” After the second, no lights appeared—a beautiful metaphor for remission. As Elise put it, “I wasn’t as pretty, but I was much happier.” Life After Thyroid Cancer: Euthyrox & Emotional Resilience Living without a thyroid brought long-term changes to Elise’s life. She now relies on Euthyrox, a synthetic hormone replacement, and must regularly adjust her dosage through medical checkups. Each visit carries emotional weight—the fear of improper dosage and dependency on medication are ongoing concerns. Despite these challenges, Elise’s experience strengthened her resolve. Today, she volunteers with the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA), advocating for patients, raising awareness, and securing donations. As a practicing psychologist, Elise also finds herself helping an increasing number of cancer survivors navigate post-treatment life.
