In the middle of January, 1945 the allied air raids had increased to such a degree that Hitler was finally forced to leave the Reich Chancellor Palace and take up permanent residency in the bunker quarters. In the following weeks the allies continued to advance while the dictator, in poor health and protected by four metres of reinforced concrete five metres below the ground, had delusions about a miraculous turn of events in his favour. Surrender was out of the question; although the war had long been lost, all energy was poured into fighting until the last man was left standing. The Reich capital, badly damaged by air raids, was now frantically preparing for urban warfare, for example, by building roadblocks like this one on Hermannplatz square in Neukölln. The government district was barricaded and even the Führer’s balcony on the extension building was used as an improvised defensive position.
