In 1989, Johnlu Koa brought a taste of Paris – baguettes, croissants and ciabattas – to the Philippines and opened the first French Baker outlet at the Annex in SM City North EDSA. Starting out as a bakery café serving sandwiches and pasta, he expanded it to serve more savory items upon the advice of Mr. Henry Sy, Sr. After more than 25 years, The French Baker has 63 branches spread all over the country. It has since evolved into a full dine-in restaurant with The French Baker Salon de Thé, bringing in world-class teas, sweets, pastries and savory dishes in delightful Parisienne interiors. Johnlu says he was really lucky that SM gave him that special moment to build his first shop at SM City North EDSA in 1989.
