Hi guys, this video is a documentary on the odd Gbagyi Tribe of Nigeria and how they shaped Abuja's History. A long time ago, a great hunter hunted in a thick forest in Paikokun land, a mountainous area in Nigeria. After successful hunting, the hunter settled at a nearby village, Gwagwalada, Abuja. Little did he know, that the village would later become the capital of Nigeria, the most populous black nation in the world. This is the story of the Gbagyi tribe, the direct descendants of the great hunter and the true owners of Abuja. The Gbagyi people initially used to live on mountain tops because they believed they were safer on the mountain than on the plain. However, when Western civilization began to spread among the Gbagyi people, most of them relocated to the plain, except the older ones who saw the mountain as a source of spiritual power and security. They felt they could protect themselves easily from attackers at the mountaintops by hauling stones at them. To this day, the Gbagyi people remain the largest ethnic group in Abuja, Nigeria hence they occupy a very prominent place in the development and growth of the capital city. It would be not easy to talk about Abuja without mentioning about Gbagyi people. There has been a lot of misconception about the true name of the gbagyi tribe. They are often referred to as gwari which in the real sense is the name of a kind of yam grown by the gbagyi tribe. As a man, getting married to a gbagyi woman can be demanding. According to the ancient gbagyi tradition, a suitor is expected to serve in the bride’s father’s farm, labouring and supplying grains and other farm produce to the bride’s house the very moment he proposes marriage to the bride. But nowadays, due to civilization, the groom can simply pay the bride’s price instead of serving 7 years on the bride’s father’s farm. The Gbagyi people are majorly farmers although they are also good in wood fetching, pottery, and blacksmith. The gbagyi tribe enjoy eating a meal known as Wyizhe. It is made from Guinean corn and it is also used to make a special drink known as zhepwo. The gbagyi tribe are easily identified by their special clothing, Ajesida made from local cotton and traditionally woven. This clothing is then dyed by special dressmakers. One striking tradition of Gbagyi people is the placing of goods however heavy on their shoulders. Gbagyi women believe the head represents the king of the entire body; hence it should not be disturbed. It is quite interesting to find out that this custom is still been practised among the gbagyi people now. The Gbagyi men however are not expected by tradition to carry loads. They believe it was ordained by their ancient God not to carry loads.
