A special tree planting session at Whangara Angus last week made for an excellent school trip with Whangara School providing the labour and the government's One Billion Trees Programme supplying the trees. http://www.gisborneherald.co.nz/video / videos / gisborneherald The whole school turned out to get their hands in the dirt as they planted a selection of 400 native trees around a dam at Whangara Angus. Each tree was blessed, as the students split into small groups to plant them into pre-dug holes. The trees came from Matawhero Nursery in Makaraka and included puriri, kanuka, manuka and cabbage trees. The students will be back in a few months to release the trees, clearing weeds and grass from around each one. Operations director of Beefgen, Micheal Lane, applied to the One Billion Trees Programme for a grant to buy the trees. He said it was great to get the community involved and the children would be able to re-visit the land and see the trees grow over time. Whangara School is also involved in planting and being kaitiaki of another important wetland on Whangara Farms, which is just across the road from the school. Principal Lisa Maniapoto said the students got so much out of doing the planting. “A karakia is said by the tamariki for each plant, so if there are 1000 rakau to be planted, there will be 1000 karakia. “This is to teach them to take the time to plant, care and be kaitiaki (guardians) as they are helping to clothe Papatuanuku (the land). “Our vision is to grow active kaitiaki and wetlands are an important part of our ecosystem so it's awesome for our tamariki to be part of making a difference to the whenua around them.” Filmed and Edited by Ben Cowper SUBSCRIBE! http://www.youtube.com/subscription_c...
