How engineers think about building occupants

Over the past decades, it’s come to light that people are increasingly influential in how buildings perform. There has been a tendency to blame occupants for building underperformance, claiming they waste energy or don’t understand how to use buildings properly. However, a major new joint IEA TCP project (between Energy in Buildings and Communities, and User-Centred Energy Systems) is debunking these myths. Our team of over 100 interdisciplinary researchers from 20 countries is seeking to generate a deeper knowledge of how various key stakeholders engage with buildings through their life and to develop new processes and tools to simultaneously optimize occupant satisfaction and energy performance. This talk provides an evolution of how we have understood the role of occupants in buildings, while also showcasing key initiatives and some early findings of our latest project.
