Trigger Warning: This seminar explores topics of family violence Recording of an online seminar hosted by Wellsprings for Women on Dowry Abuse "Love is Not Abusive" with Keynote Speaker Dr Manjula O'Connor. This seminar was held on Thursday December 3, 2020 10am- 12pm for the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. Wellsprings respects and values all women from all cultural and religious backgrounds and we recognise that in all cultures and countries there are harmful practices that impact on women’s health and wellbeing and their ability to have total control over their lives. The practices discussed in this forum are not exclusive to one culture or one country. The West is equally culpable in perpetuating and endorsing harmful practices that demean and diminish women. We hope that this seminar provides information on how the dowry tradition which varies in the way it is practiced from one country to another, can be used as a form of financial abuse. We warn against stigmatising any communities where the practice of dowry occurs.
