HOWE THE POLICE AND SUMMERS SAID YES TO FENDER ANDY SUMMERS: POLICE Rig Rundown! After HANK MARVIN officially opened the Fender Artist & Research Centre in Kensington in West London, I sent a Channel Four film crew to Andy’s studio in his house in North London to talk about his phenomenal career, owning 3 of only 8 Les Paul’s that existed in London in the sixties that exploded the careers of Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Paul Kossoff, Mick Taylor, Pete Townshend, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. Those Les Paul’s that went through Andy’s hands made London the centre of the world, kicked off the British Invasion that rebirthed the blues via London, revolutionised music and changed the lives of working class Art Students who coveted these six string weapons that lifted them out of poverty and onto the world stage to great acclaim and success. Arpeggiating ’ Every Breath You Take and Walking on the Moon! I made him a part of the Fender Britpack of luminary artists that rebranded Fender and rebuilt the brand with a new $22m factory, and made a clone of his legendary Tele Custom and kicked around some ideas for combining his photography with a custom Tele finish all before breakfast in 1986. After filming Andy with the Channel Four film crew I drove them round the corner from Andy's house to STEVE HOWE's house in Hampstead to talk to the magnificent YES guitarist about his 'Relayer' Tele and the profound affect Charlie Christian had on himself as a nascent guitar player who loaned his Hofner Senator E1 guitar to Jeff Beck to smash up in Antonioni's homage to The Who's guitar smashing as ART antics in 'Blow Up' Antonioni booked The Yardbirds when Townshend declined to smash up a guitar in an ART movie as it would be pastiche and inauthentic! Jeff wasn't happy about it either so he borrowed Steve Howe's guitar and left The Yardbirds soon after this MOVIE moment. YES: those were the days!
