Close to mid shot of Roberts STORYLINE: Academy award winner Julia Roberts is asking lawmakers of the U.S. Congress for money to help find a cure for Rett Syndrome. She was in Washington DC on Thursday, appearing before a panel on Capitol Hill with a plea for funding to study the illness. Rett, or R.S., is a neurological condition that affects girls between six and eight months of age and leads to severe disability. Roberts greeted members of a House appropriations panel responsible for funding medical research. Then Roberts fought back tears during testimony as she described her friendship with Abigail, an R.S. victim who died last June at the age of 10. Rett Syndrome is a debilitating neurological disorder historically believed to affect one in 10,000 females. It is now believed that the prevalence of R.S. may be much higher. Although rare, it is possible for boys to also have R.S.
