Shape of Jazz to Come - Celebrating Ornette Coleman Who has taken jazz to the next level and led it into the future? Ornette Coleman is a name that pops up here as a shining example of an alto saxophonist and composer with a rarely seen generous collective improvisational philosophy along with the well-composed melody. As an alto saxophonist, his sound was a kind of speaking light saxophone sound that Benjamin Koppel admires and will pay tribute to for a fantastic evening. Also on stage is Scott Colley, who was a student of Charlie Haden who played with Coleman and considered Colley as his heir, bringing him to the last concerts Haden played with his quartet and letting Scott Colley play in his place. They've also invited trumpeter Ralph Alessi on stage, who is no stranger to Coleman's rich repertoire, matching Alessi's sound and lack of fear of improvisation. Completing the quartet is the sought-after Jeff Ballard on drums, who has played with Ray Charles, Pat Metheny and Chick Corea, among others. Line Up: Benjamin Koppel (saxophone), Ralph Alessi (trumpet), Scott Colley (bass), Jeff Ballard (drums)
