Have you ever heard of the Schumann resonance? Well, it refers to a set of natural electromagnetic frequencies that exist in the space between the Earth’s surface and its upper atmosphere. These frequencies are created by lightning activity and the Earth–ionosphere system acting like a vast resonant cavity, similar to how a musical instrument resonates within its body. A bit jargony, but the fundamental mode of this resonance occurs at approximately 7.83 Hz, with several higher modes above it. Now, that being said, these frequencies exist far below the range of our mere mortal ears! We can't hear them (we 'may' be able to subconsciously be able to perceive them somehow) but usually they can only measured with scientific instruments. The Schumann resonance is often described as the Earth’s 'background hum' or 'Earth's heartbeat' and is commonly associated, in a general and non-medical sense, with calm, rest, and grounding. I have touched on it before in my Earth Vibration videos (https://youtu.be/lKKlfkK49fU)(https:/..., but not focused a video exclusively on it. Anyway, to create this piece, I began by generating the core Schumann frequencies using a MIDI keyboard and synthesizer environment. Each resonance mode was carefully mapped and then sonified, meaning the original inaudible frequencies were translated into the audible range while preserving their relative relationships and slow rhythmic behaviour. From there, the tones were shaped, balanced, and refined using standard audio engineering tools to create a stable, continuous sound suitable for long listening sessions. I then layered gentle brown noise beneath the tones. Brown noise emphasises lower frequencies and is often described as sounding deeper and warmer than white or pink noise. It was chosen intentionally to add a sense of weight and earthiness, reinforcing the grounded character of the sound while helping smooth transitions and mask sharp edges. I actually left it on in my headphones accidentally while I did the editing for the animation and thumbnails, and totally forgot it was still playing, almost like my mind channelled it out. It was crazy! Definitely something very earthy and organic about this one! Hope you enjoy this little experiment and it beings you some well-earned slumber! Sleep long and sleep well, friends.
