Pruning vines is not difficult at all and a trellis in the garden can look beautiful. We show you how to do it! Pruning, whether you want to grow a trellis, a pergola or a stock crop, should be done annually in winter. Until early winter, nutrients are still shifted from the shoot tips to the base. This promotes wood maturity and therefore pruning should only be done from the new year (January, February) and not in December or earlier. One should pay attention to healthy, well-matured wood, because the quality of the cut shoots in vines significantly influences the quality and yield of the coming year. The number of cut buds determines the maximum number of grapes and thus the yield. The correct number of buds depends on many factors: Variety water supply conditioning Yield and quality (of previous years) Disease and pest infestation The first two eyes are less fertile than the ones above. Depending on the variety, the fertility decreases with the shoot length. The cut shoots are cut off approx. 1 cm above the eye. This is different from fruit trees, where you should cut without stumps! : The trunk height in a trellis is about 70 - 90cm.
