I was reading the John 13 account of Jesus' preparations before the last supper when the words of John 13:2-3 and John 13:5-8 . These verses reveal that Jesus was aware that his last hour was quickly approaching and in those finals moments we are dealing with several aspects of his knowledge in that moment. He knew it was time to go. He knew he had done what he came to do. He knew he loved the ones he was about to leave. He knew Judas Iscariot was about to betray him. He knew the betrayal was hurtfult but it didn't change his love for the ones he came to earth to save. He knew he still had power to choose. He knew the power of love. He knew that He was going to return to the Father soon. He knew he wanted to leave something with the disciples before he departed to remind them of God's love. Imagine yourself in the shoes of Jesus for the moment. Knowing all that that you knew in that hour, would you have been able to continue with the program as instructed knowing that someone you love is about to break your heart in seconds. The John 13 passage is encouraging because it demonstrates that despite what truth we know, we have a choice to continue in the sacrifices that require us to lay our lives down. Jesus showed us how.
