Climb aboard B-24D Liberators for a run over Rangoon, and then B-25 Mitchells as they attack airfields and shipping from treetop height. Combat cameramen documented the Pacific war in these two sessions preserved in the national Archives. The B-24s are probably from the 7th Bomb Group of Tenth Air Force. It is interesting to see this heavy bomber mission on the other side of the world from B-24s flown by the Eighth Air Force in Europe. This 7th BG mission appears to ride, at 15,000 feet, above largely ineffectual Japanese flak. Some of the B-24 crewmen have A-2 leather jackets with prominent American Flag chits sewn to the backs. The B-25 medium bombers work over Rabaul, using forward firepower to suppress enemy return fire, while striking targets on the airfields and shipping at sea. We are indebted to the combat cameramen for making these films more than 80 years ago, and to the National Archives for preserving this historical material. So, which mission did you find more interesting – B-24s over Rangoon or B-25s over Rabaul? Give us your vote in the Comments section, below.
