After uploading a couple of shows from 1993, a subscriber by the name of “Ethan Thompson - Murray” wrote me some private messages concerning my next uploads. He said that while he liked my recent uploads, he was looking forward to hearing something from his favorite Elton John tour of all-time. After pressing the issue for a few seconds, he said that he really wanted some 1979 tour uploads and that he could go to sleep at night if I uploaded shows from that tour. I promised him that I work out a schedule for that tour’s uploads and that I would fit them into my to-do list. Without further ado, here is the first 1979 upload that will grace this channel! Special thanks to “EltonStuff” for sending me this upgraded copy since my old copy was garbage! This is the earliest known recording from the North American leg of the 1979 tour and it’s a very fragmentary recording that is about 40 minutes long. With only seven songs available to listen to in reasonably good quality, it is very difficult to get a full grasp on the show to see how it truly ranks among the 1979 tour. I hope that there is a longer copy out there that doesn’t yet circulate because anything from this era is worth a listen. No matter if it’s the European leg, the North American leg, or the Australian leg, this era of Elton shows should never be overlooked. From the limited quantity of material from this date, this show seems like a good one and would likely contain some highly ranked performances. While Elton sounds strong vocally with a fairly clear tone, he doesn’t sound nearly as settled in or confident as he would later on in the tour. With this being the first show of a 10-night run in Los Angeles, it is possible that nerves and early tour leg rust are slightly affecting Elton’s overall prowess as by early October, he is more confident with his playing and singing ability. This is still a great “preview” of sorts to the North American leg of the tour and things only get better from here! Now… time to go through these seven performances… “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” has great singing on it, but the piano playing (while good) isn’t quite as expressive and fleshed out as later versions where Elton puts even more into his playing. “Tonight” is a very good version (as per the norm during this era), but a few notes aren’t hit with clean intonation and this would be tightened up as the tour leg progresses. “Better Off Dead” isn’t as punchy or confident as later versions, but the performance still contains some nice cleaner singing mixed in with overdriven rougher parts. “Idol” shows off Elton’s vocal control as he shifts from smooth mid-ranged singing, to nice falsetto, and to a robust lower range with seemingly no difficulty. “I Think I’m Going To Kill Myself” has some great vocals and Elton chuckling in the last chorus. “I Feel Like A Bullet (In The Gun Of Robert Ford)” sounds great as Elton’s falsetto and register shifting is smooth and his control of his upper range is fantastic. Concluding this upload, “Bennie And The Jets” is a fun and energetic performance as Elton and Ray Cooper play off each other fantastically and Elton shows off some great falsetto! ENJOY!!!
