Used car prices increased by 47% during 2021. But what will happen in 2022? Will they finally come down, will they stabilize, or can we expect a further increase? Yet, when we zoom in to Q4 2021, we can start to see some signs of stabilization in the used car market. We can namely see that used day’s supply is close to 2019 levels. This is fuelled by decreasing retail and aggressive buying from car dealers. In other words, the elastic might be out of the price. The new car market, however, looks completely different; New day’s supply is far below 2019 level and shows no signs of improvements. What does all of this mean for used car prices in 2022? We explore two different forecasts. The first one predicts a net price decrease of 3% percent while the second forecast shows a decrease of 20% to 30%.
